a little more about me

Based in London, England, I've been working in IT since 1995. In 1996 I joined CMG (which later became LogicaCMG) as a consultant in the Advanced Technology division, gaining skills in Java and .NET development, Agile methods and architecture across a wide variety of industries and countries.

I set up Louise Tolman Consulting in 2004 and now provide architecture and solution design services to clients both in the UK and across the world.

I have in-depth experience in both mobile telecoms and central government, although I've also worked in financial services, automotive engineering and a couple of others. Since 2004 I have worked as an associate of several top UK and international consultancy firms, including CGI, Anite and EDS, on projects whose end users include Vodafone Group, Vodafone Netherlands, Hutchison 3G (Australia), and the UK Borders Agency. I also spent two years working for the Criminal Justice IT organisation within the UK Government's Home Office as an integration architect.

my skills and qualifications

I have recent hands-on experience at every stage of the software delivery lifecycle, from architecture through design to development, including skills such as:

  • Enterprise architecture - I've worked on several large EA programmes and in April 2009 became a TOGAF 8.1 Certified Practitioner
  • Solution design using UML 2.0, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, and patterns
  • Requirements analysis using business and system use cases
  • Agile methodologies - I've worked both as lead developer on a DSDM project and as architect on a hybrid Scrum/DSDM project, and have seen how Agile can deliver real value to the people who matter, quickly
  • Java and Web development - although I don't do a lot of full-on coding any more, I like to keep my hand in, and spent a month in 2008 working on a financial services platform written in Java 1.6

I have an MA in French with Spanish from the University of Cambridge, where I studied from 1990 to 1994.
